Slurry mixing: recipe for reliable resultsFebruary 2024 In the dynamic landscape of food and feed |
Challenges in mineral oil analysisOctober 2023 Mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) are a complex mixture of |
Nicotine on food: clearing the smokeSeptember 2023 Nicotine is the main alkaloid in tobacco and other tobacco species; it is also found in low concentrations in other crops belonging to the family of Solanaceae. Due to its insecticidal capacity, the compound was used as an active substance in |
Dithiocarbamates: tricky by natureAugust 2023 Dithiocarbamates (DTCs) are a group of organosulfur fungicides, widely used for decades to control hundreds of fungal pathogens in a variety of crops. DTCs are very instable and therefore metabolise quickly to carbon disulfide (CS2). This causes two important challenges: (i) naturally occurring CS2 in certain crops can generate false positive results and (ii) the analytical distinction of the different DTCs is very challenging. |
Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids: A Wolf in Sheep's ClothingJuly 2023 Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are naturally occurring compounds which are mainly produced as secondary metabolites by plants to ward off predators (herbivores) but are also produced by certain fungi and bacteria. |
Acrylamide - heated with a twistMay 2023 Some foods, such as potatoes, are heated in order to obtain a certain, desired, flavour and aroma. However, during this heating (>120°C) also acrylamide can be formed, in a process known as the Maillard reaction. Read more... |
Harmonised action limits for MOAHin foodNovember 2022 Mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) are a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, which are chemical compounds of different sizes and structures. MOH can be present on food as a contaminant, resulting from for example pollution, food processing or packaging. |
MCPD analysis in oils and fatsFebruary 2023 During the processing (refining) of edible vegetable oils and fats, some process contaminants are formed, including 2-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (2-MCPD), 3-monochloropropane,-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) and its related fat soluble forms (also known as 3-MCPD esters), and glycidyl esters (GE). |
Alternative sources for pesticidesFebruary 2023 Positive findings of active ingredients of pesticide products in food and feed samples can certainly not always be attributed to deliberate use. This can lead to disagreements between different parties of the food industry as well as between laboratories and their clients. |

Newsletter highlight
Primoris is part of relana, the quality circle of a dozen European labs concerning analysis of pesticides and contaminants. Earlier this year Primoris saw a relana audit and received excellent feedback. In the first place the lab shows a high and stable level of quality and furthermore, the auditors were impressed with the competence of our staff.
Flash news
Due to the efforts of our in-house R&D team, we can now offer a drastically lower reporting time for the analysis of acrylamide, as well as a lowered reporting limit.
Legislation | Inorganic arsenic in cereal, rice and babyfood
On 06/03/2023 the European Commission published regulation 2023/0465 regarding the maximum levels of inorganic arsenic in certain foods.
As of now we will analyse maleic hydrazide (MH) using LC-MS/MS instead of UV, resulting in faster and more precise results.
